“The process of embryo-genesis begins where the haploid sperm (23 chromosomes) and the haploid egg (23 chromosomes) fuse to form a diploid 46 chromosomes zygote. Here the genetic material and sex of the baby is settled.”^[1]

In other words, when a woman’s egg is fertilized by a man’s sperm, a single cell is formed, which, with 23 chromosomes from the father and 23 chromosomes from the mother, multiplies and grows into a human baby with 46 chromosomes.^[2] “All the instructions for how the child will grow are in the genes on these chromosomes. Each cell of the body will contain exact copies of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that were in the first cell that was formed by the egg and sperm.”^[3]

God, using our chromosome structure, DNA, and genes, instilled in each of us a unique genetic makeup. While we all belong to the same species, we vary from one another. We are beautifully unique and original.

Even with all this incredible diversity among humans, our genetic composition also limits variation among humans. Even though angels may be made in God’s image too, He did not design for humans to mix with angels. He also did not intend for us to adulterate with any beast. It was the fallen angels’ idea to mate with human women (and animals) which sabotaged the human race and the rest of God’s creation. As the Bible narrative moves forward, this becomes even more obvious.

The Seed War Continues

Nephilim were a result of an angelic assault against God and human genetics. It continued the seed war—an enduring battle that Satan began in the Garden of Eden. The children of angelic/human unions were hybrids, and not within the kinds that God said were good. Changing the kinds God made was a hostile strategy of warfare against His kingdom and perfectly balanced creation, and for many centuries afterward, the race of giant hybrid beings caused havoc for the human race.

After the angelic invasion, humans were no longer merely a spiritually fallen race; they became physically corrupted. These characteristics were blatant in the first generations of angel/human mixed children. To better elucidate the situation, I wish to address the varying versions of the Bible and what those different versions of the Scriptures say.

I typically use the New American Standard Bible (NASB) for the verses I provide. But there are other accurate versions of the Bible, too. For instance, the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible is a solid English interpretation of the Scriptures. While versions of the Bible generally agree with one another, they can sometimes interpret a word differently. The KJV, published in 1611, is harder to read for modern English-speaking audiences, so I don’t use it often. Still, it is a worthy reference.

Genesis 6:4 from the NASB Bible (referenced above) uses the word Nephilim. But the same verse below from the KJV interprets Nephilim as giants.

Genesis 6:4 KJV There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The Nephilim were giants who had the physical power to force rule over humans during the ensuing centuries. Not only were they of impressive physical size and strength, but they had a certain spiritual capacity and awareness about them that had been inherited from their angel fathers. Using their demi-god endowments, they took advantage of humans, often overcoming them with their size, evil demeanor, and predatory nature. This was an effective seed war strategy for the kingdom of darkness, and the Bible explains this situation more clearly as the story continues.

Strange Flesh

As I mentioned above, the mating of fallen angels and humans was an act the Lord had not intended to take place. The Nephilim were demi-gods, not created in the image of God, as are the offspring of two human parents. As noted earlier, women have a pair of X chromosomes in their eggs (or seed), and men have X and Y chromosomes in their sperm (or seed). But what about an angel? We cannot even speculate. We don’t have the information to really know how God fashioned them. But surely God created angels differently than humans, although both reflect certain elements of God’s image.

Jude referred to this scenario when describing the angels that left their domain. He states those angels went after strange flesh.

Jude 1:7 Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

Much of the violence that happened in the world before the Flood, and even after it, can be attributed to this mixing of strange flesh. I’m not suggesting humans are perfect; all humans have fallen from grace and are sometimes unfaithful. What I am being sure to state clearly is the flesh of living beings, which is based in the genetics God designed, was corrupted by the fallen Watcher angels.

Strange flesh skewed the personalities, countenances, and physiques of the Watchers’ children. They became giants, far different than human in character and size, and their divergence of temperament influenced morality on the earth. The Nephilim brought about a violent world and eventually induced the Lord to flood the earth.

Flavius Josephus, renowned historian, commented on the demeanor of the Nephilim compared to humans.

Josephus, Antiquities 1:3:1 For many angels of God accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians call giants.^[4]

Because the Nephilim had modified spirits and bodies, they were not humans with 46 chromosomes. They were not made in God’s image. Because of this situation they were forbidden from eternal life and God could not tolerate them in His fragile ecosystem. He necessarily had to restrict the hybrids from the resurrection Jesus will eventually provide for us.

Keep in mind something that Jesus warned us about when He lived in this world and taught God’s best to humanity. For one, He asserted about being the Son of Man. He made it His business to point out He was fully human.

Matthew 24:37-38 For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,

While it may sound normal for people to eat, drink, to marry and give in marriage, those activities were not normal in the days before the Flood. Rather, it was a period of time filled with hybrid beings whom God had to destroy, because of the modified genetics those ancient humans had in their bodies. This bears repeating, so I’m providing a parallel account from the book of Luke.

Luke 17:26-27 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so will it also be in the days of the Son of Man: people were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, and they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

The fallen angels and society did before the Flood what in our day and age is called genetic engineering, transhumanism, or genetic enhancement. This is why it’s vital we understand this phase of history. By knowing past events, we can perceive the future.

Transhumanism and Gene-editing

In a Genetic Literacy Project article published September 21, 2017, Alexander Thomas offered the following:

“Transhumanism is the idea that humans should transcend their current natural state and limitations through the use of technology—that we should embrace self-directed human evolution. If the history of technological progress can be seen as humankind’s attempt to tame nature to better serve its needs, transhumanism is the logical continuation: the revision of humankind’s nature to better serve its fantasies.”^[5]

The definition above does not explicitly refer to manipulating DNA, and I’m not suggesting it’s misguided to use technological apparatuses to help humanity function or to become more capable. But some people believe mixing human genes with other species in order to gain enhanced physical and mental capabilities is useful and therefore, acceptable. This is fast becoming a trend in society, and may transform it into something entirely different. Consider what Sarwant Singh, a contributor to Forbes magazine, had to say in an article published November 20, 2017:“This transformation will be messy, complex, and sometimes scary, but signals already point to a future of humanity that will blur our identities into transhumanism.” ^[6]

Singh goes on to say, “To understand this topic, our Visionary Innovation Group looked at three fundamental pillars of humanity and how they will evolve over the coming 10–15 years: our bodies, our thought, and our behavior. He concludes that “body augmentation capabilities . . . will enable humans to be smarter, stronger, and more capable than we are today.” Body augmentation could be simple, as in wearing a hearing aid or a prosthetic for enhanced capability. It’s not amiss to augment human bodies to help a defective limb, joint, or to enhance a failing sense, like hearing or sight. But Mr. Singh and others have another intent for body augmentation.

Transhumanism will be much more than wearable or implanted body enhancements. Developments will occur at the DNA level. Mr. Singh continues, “The most powerful body augmentation will come from biological augmentation as a result of increased insight into our genomes, advances in IVF technology that may allow us to select the most intelligent embryos, and powerful CRISPR gene-editing technology which may one day give us the ability to eliminate all heritable diseases.” While some of this may sound exciting, there does not seem to be much thought given to the unexpected results of rewriting human genetics—the same genetics that make humans imagers of God. Remember, the hybrid genetics of the Nephilim in the days of Noah eliminated them from being in God’s image, which restricted them from participating in the resurrection to come.

According to some transhumanism advocates, in order for the human race to achieve something akin to eternal life, it is incumbent upon us to engineer it ourselves. David Pearce, a leading proponent of transhumanism and co-founder of Humanity+, says: “If we want to live in paradise, we will have to engineer it ourselves. If we want eternal life, then we’ll need to rewrite our bug-ridden genetic code and become god-like … only hi-tech solutions can ever eradicate suffering from the world. Compassion alone is not enough.”^[7]

Might the goals of transhumanist thought and activities be similar to what the fallen angels sought to accomplish? For some reason, the Watchers were purposeful in ignoring Yahweh’s unmatched wisdom and were resolute in their aim to step out of the purposeful design of God’s magnificent creation. I ask the question again, realizing the repetition of this concept. Might this be why Jesus said the coming of the Son of Man—the Last Days—would be like the days of Noah?

Physical and Moral Corruption of the World

The fallen Sons of God changed the order of God’s creation so that living beings no longer reproduced in the God-intended way. Humanity was compromised. The Watcher/human spawn had biologically augmented bodies as well as different thoughts and behavior than human beings. I purposely use words similar to Sarwant Singh’s to describe their treachery. It was transhuman thoughts and behavior that increased wickedness in the world.

Genesis 6:5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

At that moment in time, God lamented having ever created humankind, so He decided to wipe them from the face of the earth and start anew. This He did not do lightly, as He grieved in His heart for His greatest creation.

Genesis 6:6–7 The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.”

The wickedness and evil propagating on earth resulted in humanity becoming wholly corrupt, both morally and physically—a consequence the dark kingdom desired.

Genesis 6:11–12 Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

The world seemed morally and physically bankrupt; the extinction of humankind was near.

Genesis 6:13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.”

Corrupted Creatures

The Bible provides amazing descriptions of cherubim and seraphim heavenly hosts that are actually hybrids with the heads of oxen, humans, lions, eagles and serpents. (I explain these creatures more thoroughly in Roots of the Kingdom.) However, they were fully God-made, created entirely by Yahweh so they were unreservedly legitimate. Conversely, did the Watcher angels (with their limited knowledge) try to create hybrid beings as Yahweh had done? If so, this would have corrupted God’s balanced creation. Might the goal of modern transhumanism bring about similarly debased creatures because of limited knowledge, just like the Watchers caused?

The verses from the previous section indeed state that all flesh was corrupted, implying that even animals, which are made of flesh, were adulterated by the fallen angels and subsequent Nephilim. This fouled the genes of every type of animal just as it had fouled humans.

The Bible gives examples of beings on earth that had human/animal features. Without the information I’ve been providing, people—even Biblical scholars—think these Bible passages are incorrect embellishments perpetuated by the writers of Scripture, or inaccurate translations. For example, the translation of 1 Chronicles 11:22 in the NASB states that Benaiah “struck and killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab.” However, the King James Version of the Bible reveals a possible inaccuracy in the NASB. It states that Benaiah “slew two lionlike men of Moab.”

1 Chronicles 11:22 (KJV) Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.

In the Book of Isaiah, the presence of satyrs, a human/goat hybrid, is briefly mentioned. Was the verse meant to be metaphorical or literal?

Isaiah 13:21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

 The Israelites are not the only ancient people who were aware of hybrid beings in existence. The god of the Canaanites, Greeks, Romans, and other Non-Hebrew races also embraced a belief of hybrid beings created by a mix of gods and humans.

The Gods

Modern archeologists are aware that the Canaanites idolized multiple deities, similar to how the Greeks and Romans entertained the pantheon of gods. It is probable their stories of the gods from these people groups were true accounts of the Watchers mating with women? Perhaps the accounts of subsequent generations of their hybrid children were embellished to add chatter and to sound appealing. The theme of sex, fertility, and power mongering repeats amidst the Gentile grapevine.

Stories of Greek and Roman gods arguably derived from the Canaanites’ rumors. For instance, the Canaanite god El Elyon and the goddess Asherah were supposedly the parents of 70 gods.  Whereas, Greek mythology often begins with Cronus and Rhea who had six children.  Ops, the Roman goddess of fertility, and her husband Saturn had many children and are the Roman interpretation of the god and goddess myths.

What thoughts or hints of hybrid beings and corrupted half human/half animal creatures can we derive from descriptions such as I’ve presented above? Is it possible that different forms of monsters are much more possible than we initially might expect?

Monsters

Charles J.S. Thompson (1862 – 1943) was educated at the University of Liverpool and was the curator for the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. Then the Royal College of Surgeons of England elected him the curator of the historical section of their museum. He was a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and also wrote volumes about the various phases of medical history.

In 1941, Nazi bombing destroyed the museum at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London. Fortunately, Dr. Thompson had completed a comprehensive survey of the instruments in his book, “The History and Evolution of Surgical Instruments.” ^[8] Dr. Thompson’s book is still reprinted and available today. His efforts make it possible for medical students to understand the evolution of surgical instruments, even though many had been destroyed. I mention these celebrated credentials that show the acceptance of his colleagues because he had great interest in curiosities some may detest.

Dr. Thompson was very much interested in what society used to call monsters. From all over the world there have been abnormal creatures and monstrosities, and he studied them. The medical establishment made it their business to examine the bizarre anomalies for awareness. “As Dr. Thompson makes clear, many of the monsters, giants, and dwarfs of mythology and fairytales had their origins in facts as real as the specimens preserved in surgical museums today.”^[9] In his book, The Mystery and Lore of Monsters, he includes situations and sightings of “cyclopes, mermaids, hermaphrodites, giants, two-headed individuals, and limbless cripples”^[10] and much more that is fascinating.

The Biblical references I provided of odd creatures should not be doubted. Throughout history there have been reports of human and animal hybrid creatures. Is it possible the various half-breed creatures in history had their foundations in the gene defilement of the Watcher rebellion? They likely were not awesome-looking creatures like cartoons and movies pretend them to be. But as centuries wore on, their haphazard gene structure would have caused grotesque features.

I encourage you to do an online search for images of the hybrid humans that occasionally inhabited the old world. Crossbreed examples can include: minotaurs (ox – human), chimeras (lion – goat – snake), centaurs (human – horse), sphinxes (human – lion), and mermaids (human – fish). Many people blindly dismiss these possibilities of history, but might these creatures be more than fables?

Before the Israelites went into the land of Canaan, Moses expressly prohibited bestiality because the nations in Canaan’s land had become defiled by practicing the abomination. It perverted God’s creation because some of the genes of humans and animals mixed. This was a contributing factor as to why God instructed His people to destroy the Canaanites and, in many cases, even their animals. Such was the culture of many of the nations in Canaan’s Land.

Leviticus 18:24 Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled.

God abhorred bestiality and made it a capital offense for humans and animals to interbreed. Note that in such instances, the animal was to be killed as well.

Leviticus 20:15–16 If there is a man who lies with an animal, he shall surely be put to death; you shall also kill the animal. If there is a woman who approaches any animal to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.

Before the Flood, the animals of earth were also corrupted physically. It was a monstrosity of a situation that God needed to rectify immediately before physically untainted humans and animals went extinct.

The Last Days

Back then, people paid no heed to the precarious situation the world was in. Many must not have realized humanity was on the edge of extinction. Similarly, Jesus said when the Son of Man comes, it will be like the days of Noah. I realize I’m repeating this theme again, to warn of its crucial and perilous nature. However, what might multiple, injected doses of medicines do to innocent humans? Of course, given to save humanity. What might genetic engineering bring about in humans in today’s world and the future?

Matthew 24:37–39 For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

Note that the ancient people did not understand what was happening until the Flood abolished them. Jesus will come in the last days to bruise the serpent’s head (Gen. 3:15). Hopefully it happens before Satan’s lies destroy much of humanity. It will still not actually be the final death blow to the devil. But when Jesus returns, it will be the beginning of the end for Satan and the kingdom of darkness. After a brief attempt to destroy the saints (those loyal to Yahweh), the devil will be bound for a thousand years while Jesus reigns during His peaceful and prosperous kingdom on Earth. After that final earthly millennium, Satan will be released for a short time. Then he will experience final judgment in the lake of fire (Rev. 20:9-10).^[11]

A Perspective

Let’s ask ourselves a few questions to underscore the points I’ve made about the assault by the kingdom of darkness upon God’s creation.

Did God cause the Watcher angels to fall and rebel against His law? Did God intend for the Sons of God (angels) to take wives and leave their jurisdiction? Were the angels more powerful than God, such that He could not save the women (and the animals) from them? Did the angels out-maneuver God in such a way that He was unable to make them cease and desist from their illegal activity?

Of course, the answers are “no.” So then, why didn’t God immediately correct this situation? This brings to mind a thought Ludwig von Mises had about God. He was a prominent economist that lived from 1881 to 1973. He once wondered that if God is truly omnipotent, and suggested that if God were all-powerful He would “remove his uneasiness once and for all at one stroke.” Furthermore, if God “were almighty, he would have long since radically removed his discontent.” ^[12] My short answer is, God is not a tyrant, and He is patient. He seeks to teach His ways to His family members, who are weak.  Those are humans and angels, those with whom He participates to accomplish His work.

All these events happened because angels, Nephilim, and humans have free will. God grants us the liberty to make good or wicked choices. In it all, we’re learning to use the power God has given us. If we are faithful in this world, He can grant us the power of heavenly beings when we resurrect. God chooses not to control, favoring instead to use situations brought about by wickedness to sort out which souls will choose the kingdom of God or the kingdom of darkness.

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

In it all, the Lord is doing some sorting on the beach between the good fish and the bad.

Matthew 13:47–48 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; and when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away.
